About Hygiene
The discipline of Occupational Hygiene is based on systematic scientific processes to reduce the probability of workers’ health and well-being being adversely affected by Health Hazards whilst at work. The benefits in being compliant with organisational and legislative requirements extend to improving Safety and the Environment and to safeguarding the general Community.
The benefits afforded by effective Occupational Health Management however can only be fully realised when it is well embedded in organisational business management and planning.
An overview of the 3 Step Occupational Health Management process is shown below.
IDENTIFY |
Health and Hygiene Hazards are those that have the potential to adversely affect an individual’s health.
Health and Hygiene Hazard Identification requires:
Anticipation of health and hygiene hazards prior to workplace introduction or from changes in process; and
Identification of existing health and hygiene hazards.
Unless these hazards are properly identified, the risks from exposure and any potential adverse impacts cannot be reliably evaluated, or effectively controlled.
|
ASSESS |
Health Risk Assessment of worker exposure to Health and Hygiene Hazards is determined using the following two consecutive processes:
Process 1: Health Risk Assessment
This process incorporates collection of information relating to, for instance, the health and hygiene hazard, exposure circumstances, hazard controls and control effectiveness. Theapproach introduces the concept of the ‘Similar Exposure Group’ (SEG). This health risk assessment is ‘Qualitative’ being based on Expert Professional Judgement.
Process 2: Quantitative Health Risk Assessment
This process incorporates the interpretation of measured SEG worker exposure against acceptable exposure guidelines, using statistical analysis. This assessment is based on established Scientific Methods.
|
CONTROL |
Controlling health and hygiene hazards requires implementation of effective controls to prevent any adverse health, safety and environment and community impacts.
Controls for health and hygiene hazards are implemented in accordance with the ‘Hierarchy of Control’ approach and often complement the effective management of Safety and Environment hazards.
The findings of a Quantitative Health Risk Assessment enable the implementation of focused short and long-term workable strategies for reduction of worker exposure risks.
Outcomesinclude:
Health Hazard Register;
Health Risk Register;
Health Hazard Control Action Plans highlighting additional site specific exposure reduction controls which align with organisational strategies and planning;
Programs for ongoing exposure assessment and health surveillance.
Benefitsinclude:
Understanding current and future health exposure risks;
Addressing workplace concerns;
Reduction of Health, Safety and Industrial incidents through identification of high exposure-risk activities;
Compliance with organisation, regulatory and community requirements.
Our capabilities to assist in the implementation of effective site-specific Health and Hygiene Management processes are listed in Services. |
